Who they are
Depressed People’s Welfare Association (DPWA) is a not for profit that was started in 1984, by Rev. Fr. S. Dhanapragasam. Having served as a catholic priest for eight years, he resigned his ministry during his treatment of the near fatal injuries he sustained in a road accident in February 1984. First as a priest and later as a social worker for all, irrespective of caste or creed, he dedicated himself for the uplifting and emancipation of the rural poor.
What they do
After 25 years of service, DPWA is proud to say that it has actively changed the lives of over a million people in and around Tiruchirapalli district. Today DPWA continues to facilitate various initiatives including:
- The running of 5 schools for poor children, 11 orphanages, 2 old age homes, 2 homes for the blid, and a refuge for the child victims of 2004 tsunami.
- The provision of low-cost housing to the poor.
- Access to safe drinking water to over 600,000 people through deep borewells.
- Conducting free eye camps every month for the needy people. At present DPWA has conducted over 600 eye camps in various villages.
- The provision of cattle and the dispersal of milching animals through bank loans and government subsidies for the poor landless agricultural labourers.
- The empowerment of women through self-help groups.
