Who they are

Tubo lodge was initiated by 2 communities with WWF support in 1996. The name Tubo is derived from the first 2 initials of Tugiri and last 2 initials of Yo’obo village.

Over the years Tubo became run down until it was reconstructed last year from money saved from visitors since 1997 and with support of their community leader, Norman Ba’abi.

Tubo Lodge is located on an island in the middle of Lake Kutubu, one of the most spectecular Locations in the Southern Highlands province of Papua New Guinea.

Lake Kutubu is a special lake in a special part of the world. The Kikori Basin is home to the world’s longest lizard, largest egg-laying mammal (the echidna), largest pigeon, largest moth, and second-largest butterfly. Lake Kutubu plays such a big role in maintaining the Earth’s natural diversity that in 1998 it was declared a Wetland of International Importance.

What they offer

Bird watching
Surrounded by dense tropical Rainforest Lake Kutubu provides an opportunity for guests to see the local birds in their natural habitat. Tubo Lodge tour guides will lead treks around the lake to see the abundant wildlife.

Bebere and Kosama Skull Caves
For those interested there is an opportunity to visit the famous Bebere and Kosama Skull Caves. These skull caves are traditional burial grounds and where traditional burial rites are still observed.

Tugiri Orchid Gardens & Butterfly Farm
Papua New Guinea is well known for its orchids. Tugiri Orchid garden has a wide range of orchids, some of which are endemic to Papua New Guinea. You can also visit the local Butterfly Farm and see, amongst many other species, the second largest butterfly in the world.

Experience the traditional way of living
Guests can also experience the traditional way of life by observing and participating in the traditional Sago making process, building canoes or just learning how to fish using traditional methods.

Trekking to Wasi (Beaver) Falls
Trek to one of the country’s largest waterfalls that plunges over a 100m into a basin where ancient burial caves are found. You will camp at a village in Kautobo and follow a route that weaves through pristine rainforest with a rich variety of birds and wildlife such as Tree Kangaroos, and many species of birds of paradise.

Location

Access to the Kutubu area is by air, Airlines PNG a second level airline, flies to Moro in the Kutubu area three times weekly. The flights usually leave Port Moresby at 2:20 PM in the afternoon and arrive in Moro at 3:50.

The flights from Moro usually departs at 8:00 am and arrives in Port Moresby at 9:30 am. This is for the convenience of the transiting overseas passengers.

All guests are met upon arrival at The Moro Airport and taken to the Lodge by the Tubo Lodge staff.

Via Mt. Hagen or Mendi.
If you prefer travelling to Mt. Hagen or Mendi, they will require that you notify them so that they can arrange for their staff to meet you in either Mt. Hagen or Mendi. This will enable them to prepare in advance of your arrival.

Whilst in Mendi you can stay at the Kiburu Lodge and travel by road to Kutubu. The trip from Mendi to Kutubu is about 4 hours by road. From Mt. Hagen to Kutubu it is about 6 hours by road.

Accommodation & Amenities

  • bed 4 single rooms , 5 self contained bungalows, & a 3 bedroom self contained House (with Kitchen & laundry)
  • All accommodation has inbuilt bathrooms except the single rooms which have shared bathroom facilities
  • They supply electricity in the evenings, and if guests require the use of electricity during the day, an arrangement can be made with Tubo Staff.
